On Wednesday 19th October, 42 students from Oaklands School in Tower Hamlets came to Guy’s campus to meet researchers and get involved in a number of hands-on experiments and science demonstrations. There were activities related to medicine and health research including demonstrations of fibre optics, anatomy models, Haematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining of biological tissue and DNA extraction. The idea behind the afternoons is for students to see that science and health research is interesting and relevant to everyday life. Most of the demonstrators are in the earlier stages of their research careers and the afternoons provide an opportunity to practice talking about science and research to a non-science audience.
Miss Salma Begum, a science teacher from the school said “We can't thank you enough; you were all very helpful and enthusiastic and made us all feel at ease. We all had a fantastic day and the students learnt allot from it. The small groups worked well as students were able to ask questions and see things up close. This is harder to achieve in a class full of 26 students back at school. The topics were related to the curriculum, we have already covered. This was a great way to reinforce learning and check understanding.”
